Volume One of the North Carolina Defender Manual is a resource for public defenders and appointed counsel who represent poor people accused of crimes. The book focuses on the principal areas of pretrial criminal procedure in North Carolina. Fifteen chapters cover a variety of topics, such as:

- Criminal pleadings
- Speedy trial
- Suppression motions
The manual includes cases decided by the courts
through June 30, 2013, and legislation enacted by the North Carolina General Assembly
through the end of its 2013 legislative session.
This publication is also useful to others who work in the court system and who need a reference source on the law. It replaces the first edition dated 1998-2004.
Volume Two, Trial, which focuses primarily on criminal procedure at the trial stage, is also available.
